[ATM] Plate glass second phase
To all,
If you missed my first listing on this subject, too bad,.. It wasn't that
interesting anyway...
The information was about cutting.. Plate glass.. 3/4"... It could be 7/8"
or thicker. Please
if you have found plate glass thicker than 3/4" please let the list know of
this rare find.
I left off talking about making circles out of squares.. Not trying to
go back and repeat
statements, I will continue my description of my process....
There are two ways to cut circles in glass (any glass.. any thickness)
(sorry there is another
process, but the cost is overwhelming-- injection high pressure cutting)..
This is not available to
me or you. The two ways available to the layman is cutting or trepaning. I
have tried both
options and they both produce a nice round circle of glass. Cutting a circle
out of a square or
"stop sign" distributes a lot more glass deposits.. Trepaning a disk takes
a drill press or rig to
put constant pressure onto the plate to "cookie cut" a disk...with very
minimal glass dust.
Trepaning is great if you have an auto feed water supply that can feed
80 or 120 grit carb.
and have afew hours to "baby sit". Just need one circle of glass?? maybe
two?? Get your
circular saw back out with your diamond blade, your water fed coolant and
your "space suit"
(safety dress)..l
Now, go back to your cutting table ...Take your square glass and "score"
your circle on the face
of the glass. ( a large compass and a carbon tipped marking tool will score
the surface)
Once the circle is scored rinse with water and make sure your circle is
complete. Dry this score
and run a permanent marker into the score mark, again and again.. The scored
circle will be black
to the bottom... This sounds like alot of crap., but a marker, a grease
pencil, and anything else
will be gone when you get to the final "trim".
Now.... get your space suit on and cut!!!! The first step is the
"octagon", (get as close as
you can to the mark).. Now continue to cut off corners as close as you can
to the circular score..
Clean up and rinse between processes.. Remember to breath and not to rush
all of this..
You will end up with a corragated "disk or circle" (all of the cuting
is done on a soaked thick
carpet surface.) (wash this surface after several cuts or the glass will
slide)
Now that you have a "half-ass" circle ,.. It's time to make a straight
cut into a curved cut..
Use your saw as a grinder(slowly) grind the remaining edges to your
"black" score line. Remember
to keep the saw at a right angle to the surface of the glass. This process
takes a little time but
it really does work... When you are satified with your circle you can use a
whetstone to even
things out. This is the handy man (cave man) process , but it works and the
end result is for
yourself and not anyone else............. Russ Jocoy
My next listing will be the cutting of a circle into glass with
rotation situations vertically and
horizontally respectively........ Russ Jocoy
