When I took a glassblowing class in college, they taught us to cut thick 
tubing (2" diameter, 0.125" thick) by scoring it well in one spot (not all 
the way around) and then heating some small (0.0625") glass rod white hot and 
touching it to the scoring on the tubing.  If you got the tubing hot enough 
it would cause the large tubing to crack all the way around very nicely.

I wonder if you could do something like this with the plate glass?
