As per my earlier post, Cary,

Try autocollimation with a pan of quicksilver or oil. Has everyone forgotten
this method? It is idiot-proof, as are all tests based on autocollimation.
And, THERE IS NOTHING TO CALCULATE, once figuring has begun. Null figuring
is wonderful; you don't even have to know arithmetic (basic arithmetic) to
null figure. (You will need to finish primary first, of course). G.W.R's
favorite method; but he was talented enough to produce a big flat instead of
having to mess around with oil or mercury.
