I thought striae was the plural.  But I'm no Latinist, having been
inflicted with a public "education" intended to render me a happy
moron, blissfully spared knowledge of cultures of other times and/or
places.

The English is "Schlieren" as far as I know.  (waviness due to
variation in refractive index of a transmitting medium, such as
seen in thermal air currents.)  It should probably lose the capital
letter in English, as it is just a normal German word, not a name.
(Unlike "Strehl" which is somebody's (Herr Doktor Strehl's) name,
and should retain the capital letter.)  Sometimess vee musst bite
zee bullet and make a Cherman vurt our own.  It's the only word
I recall being used in air pollution metrology.

"Mirage" is another name for Schlieren, I *think*.  ("Mirage" is
what the shooting sports use to refer to the Schlieren observed
through rifle scopes due to the air currents arising from solar
heated earth. It can be quite pesky, but can also be studied to
learn wind velocity.)
