Re: [ATM] RE: Magnalium

Anthony,

The GIANT ten engined B-36 "Peacemaker", designed and built to bomb the
capitals of the axis powers from the east coast of American during WW-II,
had an enormous amount of magnesium in its construction. It was the only
airplane to use both piston engines and turbojet engines to propel it. I
once saw a photograph of the sky over Washington, D.C., full of Peacemakers.
When everything was running well (all ten engines), the engineer would
often say to the pilot in command: "Six turning, four burning". Its other
nickname was "the magnesium cloud". You needed to be careful with it around
fire, though. You'd hate to see wing burn off, like Jimmy Stuart did in
"Strategic Aiur Command".

Your resident aviation historian, and also sometimes Amateur Telescope
Maker,

Dave

P.S. We kept the world at peace with 384 of these giants, carrying two
Kolosssall city smashers in their bellies. (20 megatons, I think, each). No
jet fighters in the world early in their career could reach them at
altitude. Pretty awfully off topic, I apologize. I love airplanes! Mention
of magnesium, though, makes me think of the "magnesium cloud", or
alternatively, "the magnesium overcast". 384 of them over the capital dome
was an overcast, I believe.

Too bad Morbeus blew up Altair IV; they had the perfect mirror metal, Krell
Metal, mentioned in my article:
