The calculation isn't that easy but go look up Petzval curvature, sum and
some others that don't come to mind at the moment for what causes the
curvature and how to get rid of it in a design.  Once you start putting the
curves onto pieces of glass, the curvature is then locked in and you don't
get to change it.
