For what it's worth, I did all my grinding and most of my polishing (Pads with CeO) in the garage with the door open. I used a large tub and/or hose for washing things down between grits. I moved the operation into the basement for final polishing (pitch with CeO) and figuring.
I was dealing with a 10" that was fairly easy to move about and keep things clean. With your 20" I suspect you have some additional struggles there. You say you *hear* the grinding of sand but are you seeing any scratches? If not maybe some sounds are being amplified? If so maybe you have contaminated grits or you need to do a better job of cleaning between grits.
