RE: [ATM] Making glass blanks

Yes there are risks, but then again crossing the street is taking a
risk. Where should we draw the line on risk?

I agree that with the current cost of blanks this is a somewhat futile
avenue of investigation, but then again maybe not. We all have our pet
interests.

Mine right now is building a vacuum plating set up, and it looks like
I'll be building the diffusion pump myself, so I'm not going to start
saying this a dumb thing to be considering (making blanks), but rather
we should be asking why does he want to make his own blanks? Besides you
don't have to start with glass dust, you can start with cullet, might
take longer to get the bubbles out, but it's safer for your lungs.....

These `lets grab a bucket of sand and mold our own blanks' threads
always
amuse and scare me a little .

When you can buy a precision machined blank, edged , bevelled , back
blanchard machined, front diamond generated , fine- annealed blank , for

such a reasonable price from a number of vendors why would you risk your

life trying to prepare the quality of the above in semi-ignorance with
sub
standard equipment with such a life threatening material. It is the
finishing that produces a nice blank: the annealing is cheap and the
least
of the expense. One solid exposure of not fully filtered glass dust
can
set you up for a life that is cut short by 15 yrs with emphesema'.

You might as well join up and and head for Iraq.

Why the hell would you risk it?
