FWIW, I have been collecting indices of a lot of glasses from the 
1870 to 1920 timeframe and reconstructing C. S. Hastings design 
process to boot.  For one particular lens, the differences between a 
"standard" doublet solution (where R2=R3), the solution Hastings came 
up with, and the solution that minimizes a set of specific 
constraints is on the order of hundredths of an inch in radii.
