I don't doubt that a resourceful person could do it, but the fact is, there
is basically a formula to determine what wattage is necessary for a
particular kiln given its dimensions and purpose. I would figure that you
would be stuck with about 40 kilowatts or more for a self cleaning oven to
work. My kiln works identically as a 40 kw oven kiln would with only around
7.5 kilowatts. As far as switching, I don't see why it couldn't be done.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I was basing this on the fact that after a self-cleaning
cycle, the oven is cool enough to touch after an hour or so. I would think
that if your kiln coasted down 800 degrees in an hour (about 1 degree every
4.5 seconds), then maintaining an annealing temperature accurate to a couple
of degrees would require some fairly rapid cycling. Never having watched an
annealing oven in use I wouldn't know if that's normal or not.
