Subject: lurie houghton - how well does it work?

I have read what I could about Lurie-Houghtons in
Ruutten & Van Rooij (probably misspelled) and on
various websites by people who have made them. Some
friends and I are rather intrigued, but before we
possibly start on such a project...

What I would like is a simple, gut-feeling type of
answer, from anybody with practical experience, to
these basic questions:

"Yes, yes, we've seen the spot diagrams for the
Lurie-Houghton, and so on, and they look fantastic.
But how well do they REALLY work for visual use? And
for photographic use? And are they worth all the
effort of making not one, but TWO corrector plates,
and losing all that light from the reflections at each
of the air-glass boundaries?"

After all, Dob-Newts are MUCH easier to make, and for
visual purposes, as far as I can tell, they are
impossible to beat for the money. A Schmidt-Cassegrain
of the same aperture is much inferior, visually, for
about 5 to 8 times the price. A good achromatic
refractor is not as bright, but is somewhat sharper on
planets, for (again) 5 to 8 times the price or effort.
And an apochromat is a bit sharper still, for nearly
20 to 30 times the price or effort. But in my humble
opinion, for that kind of money, one is better off
getting or making a large dobsonian-newtonian. Unless
you are wedded to photographic work.

OK - again, how many of y'all (or youse, if you
prefer) out there have actually viewed anything
through a Lurie-Houghton? And what were your
impressions?
