Seriously, if you can get 5 of a thousand REALLY interested, you are 
doing well.
  Use them to mentor others.  Age should not be the determining factor, but, it
is easy for me to say half a world away. ;-)  ANY foot hold you gain 
will be an
acheivement that most of us will never reach.

Think wider range also.  How about the metal shop and wood shop classes making
scope mount parts?  Would you be surprised to learn that many scientists need
machine skills to make their own equipment?
