Re: ATM 53 chevy delivery, now RTMC - short report
That will be an interesting car to have. It is large enough to actually
carry a good sized family and also be a real attention getter. Pontiac
parts aren't as common as Chevy stuff is but you will probably like to pick
up a copy of Hemmings Motor News magazine to find any parts that may be
needed. I hope you have the manual tranny on the car rather than an
automatic as autos from that era are not all that reliable or fuel
economical.
My '52 Chevy Sedan Delivery had its drivetrain replaced with a late '60s V8
and auto tranny. If I had done it myself, I probably would have put in a I6
engine instead just to make things a bit easier. I'll note that the 283 and
the 3.08 rear end ratio, I get 21mpg on the highway, equaling that of the
minivans today.
Don't plan on making it a powerhouse but rather a economical driving
vehicle and you will be a lot happier with the car and will drive it a lot
more. Keeping the exterior stock looking will also make the car a lot more
interesting looking.
If you do like one guy does occasionally at RTMC and bring up a large
refractor on top of his Volvo wagon, you can make the 12" refractor quite
portable.
Remember that the old cars were meant to be driven not grace a garage for
months at a time. Drive the car and enjoy the fun of it.
