Lack of proper baffling seems to be the cause of the problem when testing in
full daylight.

I've had a look at Mars early this morning, 1 hour before sunrise, and there
it was! Now, why didn't I test at night? Full moon is probably too bright
again (even though the primary isn't coated yet).

So, I'm on with making up baffles. Many thanks for that clue and giving me
some confidence in my optics and math, Michael.
