Ebony Star works because of it's pebbled surface.  WilsonArt makes several 
other laminates in that same line, in other colors. There are other 
materials, with a pebbled surface that will also work.  Take a piece of 
teflon to the store and experiment.  See which ones have low friction.  For 
a 6" scope you might not need to be as fussy as people with heavier 
equipment.

I also suggest that you call or visit other Home Depot stores or 
kitchen/homestores in your area, if possible.  I discovered that different 
stores carry different inventory.  I was able to find a store that stocked 
4x4 sheets, saving me the expense of buying a piece much larger than 
necessary.  Maybe you'll get luck and find a scrap for next to nothing!
