Actually, that really doesn't work well as the glancing reflections off of
the tube tend to continue down the tube to the eyepiece - directly opposite
of what is desired!
The baffle has the ability to hide the tube itself from the eyepiece for a
start and replace that tube with an edge which reflects very little as there
is very little material to do a glancing reflection with in the first place.
The second is that it tends to bounce the light back out the front of the
scope rather than anywhere else by the vertical part intruding into the
off-axis light path.
