Actually, you either shave down the edges, shave the edges and deepen the
center or just deepen the center to get to (hopefully!) a parabola.
Remember that the paraboloid is the point that seperates a ellipsoid from a
hyperboloid. Thus if you go far enough making an ellipsoid, you get to a
paraboloid or even further, the overcorrected paraboloid called the
hyperboloid.
Considering that the center volume is less than the edge volume that needs
to be removed, the traditional method is to mostly remove the center than
the edge.
