One of the master polishers I've worked with claims that as soon as you heat pitch up it starts loosing its essential oils, and to keep heat as low as possible to use it, and that virgin un-heated pitch that has been only warmed till it can be worked by hand is what should be used for polishing. (I think thats taking it to the extreme, but, the more you cook pitch, volatile oils do burn off, which affects the viscosity of the pitch)
