I have seen colors in M42 thru 25" under very dark Australian sky.
Usually smaller scopes show just blue and electric green, but in 25" I
saw for the first time shades of red, orange and brown. Those colors
were quite obvious, but a bit pale (certainly NOT as saturated as good
photo). But, dynamic range of eye thru the scope is more than a match for
this, because unlike photo which overexposes central parts, I could see
details EVERYWHERE. Central region (sqarrish area around the Trapezium)
was vividly green, while long western arm was purple-blue. The rest was
swirls of pink, orange, green, gray and blue. I guess you have to see it
to really appreciate stunning beauty of this object.
Now, when was that you wanted to start that 36", Mark ?
