I know someone who did this successfully on a radio telescope near boulder, colorado. I think he had to use a bus mouse and write his own version of a mouse driver, but he said it did work just fine. If I recall correctly, he said a serial mouse kept loosing bits now & then, but the bus mouse was much more predictable.
