You are exactly right. The mirror is not yet sphereical (or spherical,
for you proficient typists). Stay with your current grit with the 1/4
dia. strokes until this goes away. Alternating top and bottom will also
keep your focal length intact. Patience is the key. The finished job will
be well worth it.
