Slow Dobsonian

I am in the process of converting the mounting of my old 1936 Newtonian to a Dobsonian, which will make it more portable, inter alia.

It is a slow lens, f8, which means the tube is 7' long (the mirror is 8.5").

What material can I construct the base from, since the side supports of the horizontal axis need to be quite high (about 2.5') and I don't want the structure to be too flimsy.
