Alternative Eyepieces?

Has anybody tried using camera lenses as eyepieces? I was thinking of 28mm or shorter. The big end is typically two inches across, like an expensive eyepiece (adaptor needed).

The main advantage would be cost. Camera lenses are readily available, although 24mm wide-angle is getting a bit special. Compared to proper telescope eyepieces, you get a lot of quality glass for your money.

I haven't tried it yet.
