Where do you get this information? Are you a doctor or medical professional? Can you provide evidence to support your statement?
I seriously doubt occasional use of turpentine or mineral spirits (what I've used for over 40 years) is going to cause liver damage if used properly. I suggest you look up the MSDS (easily found on the Internet) for these solvents if you want to know what the dangers are, how to use properly, and the correct PPE to use.
Mineral spirits is easily obtained at any home supply store, is quite safe to use in a well ventilated area, is minimally flammable, has little odor, and best of all it melts pitch away quickly.
