Few Americans know that we had the first commercial nuclear generating facility online in 1957 at Shippingport, PA (on the Ohio River NW if Pittsburgh).  It operated for almost 40 years without incident.  It proved that it could be done, but the US got caught up in regulatory hassles, while the rest of the world built plants!!!
