It all depends upon how much thickness the pitch is. You can
spread out a half kilo of pitch to cover aa 12" lap if you don't
do blocks a foot thick.
The silicone mold that somebody sells is a bit thick to my
practices as I consider that the grooves only need to be there,
not a quarter of an inch deep. In addition, there is no need for
any real thickness for the whole base of the lap and a
1/16" is thick enough for that. I usually do blocks of about
1/8" when I use a mold and when I do a "Dobson" style lap then
the total thickness is usually under a quarter of an inch
