Re: [ATM] Astig. due to gravity
Actually there is also another little issue.......our non-contact
single-axis CMM device ...aka "Foucault tester" will then be sitting on a
slope and depending on the slope/tilt all sorts of load/slope issues with
mounting the tester and its axial movement will come into play.....since
there would be an axial component of the mass opposing/aiding the return
spring action...

Re: [ATM] Astig. due to gravity
Leaning the glass back is a nice concept. The only problme is
that we are used to sitting down and looking at the mirror at
some distance away at petty much a horizontal direction. This
allows for the easy space needed for the testing. Tilting at an
angle will mean digging holes in the floor or other such things
if stairs aren't available to do the test with.
Optimum would be doing the test vertically but that usually
requires a fair bit of vertical distance and things like the Red
Green homebuilt elevator really won't work too well when doing
such a test.
As a result, we're all lazy and just do the test horizontally.
For those who don't know who Red Green is, he is a Canadian
comedian who has/had a show up in the Great White North and one
of his projects was an elevator so he could get to the second
floor of the Possum Lodge without having to climb the stairs. He
forgot one thing when doing the elevator, that namely being
whether the tree limb that he hung the elevator from could
support him and the water weight that made things possible plus
the elevator box. Needless to say, the initial tests without a
person abord came off without a hitch whereupon he climbed abord
and prombtly pulled the tree limb down upon himself!
