Re: [ATM] Grinding tips (was Pencil Test/Sphere)
Francis isn't saying to grind only, but rather don't get so wound
up in looking at the work that you don't do any work.!
The reason this advice is given out so freely by all on the list
is that we are constantly being asked about this or that and the
solution is to do more grinding to see what the proper appearance
is. Then again, there are those that seem to pour all of the
grit on the tool and have problems with not having enough grit!
Those people tho are not anywhere near as common.
I will agree that there are times to look at the work but I think
that most of the articles that you see are completee with some
description of when a grit level is done.
What the basic problem is is that doing something for the first
time is always fraught with questions of whether things are going
right. To this is what the answer is dedicated to - worry less
about the work being done and just do it as others have said to
do it.
Francis may want to go back and do a series of videos on actually
testing at each stage and which tests are most instructive at any
particular grit level - you don't do a sharpie test at th rough
grinding stage as that will really tell you nothing of any reeeal
validity while a flashlight test is best done at the early
grinding stages where you can really change the ROC of the mirror
without having to go back up a bunch of grits.
So my advice which is a longer variation of the pretty standard
"worry less and grind more" is to worry less about how things are
going and grind on the mirror, relaxing your mind in the process.
Things will get done and done well as the grinding and polishing
process is really a very simple one that is really quitee hard to
get drastically wrong so don't worry about it so much, just grind
out your problems on the glass.
