Re: [ATM] Regular ATM Meetups (was No meeting tonight)

Although very young at the time, I attended the Chabot telescope
workshop in 1972 or 1973 and it was not new at that time. There were
pictures on the wall of several telescopes people had already built
there, some did not look very recent. There were several people at
Chabot who clearly had been pushing glass and aluminizing for a number
of years. Interestingly, at that time, not everyone was aluminizing.
My best friend (we were both about 8 years old) also attended that
workshop and silvered his mirror. There were even mirror kits that
included reagents for silvering. Someone named Earl Watts introduced
me to aluminizing, and I chose that. My first was an 8" F/8 pyrex,
my friend's was 6" around F/3 or F/4. Both were successful by the
standards of two 8-year-olds. This was largely due to the expertise
that was already there at that time. And yes, my 8" F/8 is still in
use. I know that workshop to be older than 35 years, albeit, Chabot
itself has moved further up the Oakland, California hills. I would
not be surprised if it is 50 years old or more.
