Not very critical - it's just a recommendation. There are fewer
possible problems than with a tile tool, especially the very first
tile tool that you make!

For hogging, some tile wears very quickly and you may grind through
them. A glass tool will wear at the same rate as the mirror. It's
also easier to clean between grits (again, something you have to pay
more attention with with tile).

During fine grinding a tile/Hydrostone tool should be pre-soaked so
that the dry tool it doesn't suck up all the water in a few seconds
and then glue itself to the mirror (had it happen).

Using a glass tool, you also have a piece of glass to use for a pitch
lap in the future. A 6" is a nice subdiameter lap to use on a 10" or
12" mirror.

So, for those reasons, it is my preference that an ATM make their
first (small) mirror by grinding two disks of glass together.

It's not that big of a jump. You can learn it now or later.
