Re: [ATM] Protect a finished optical surface to work on reverse

Collodian (sp?) and "cheese cloth" brush on a coating of collodian (it's a
nitro cellulose based lens/glass cleaner, for more info check the archives)
while it's still wet (it dries real quite, so be prepared) place a piece of
cheese cloth the same size as the glass you're working, now let things sry
out. When dry re-coat with the collodian and cheese cloth, two layers should
provide you with all the protection you need, but you can always add another
layer of collodian, the cheese cloth is just to hold the stuff together when
you peal it off when you're done polishing.

If you can't get collodian (I can't here in Australia) use a water based
acrylic paint with the cheese cloth.

Good luck.

Thomas.

Subject: [ATM] Protect a finished optical surface to work on reverse

On the first polishing attempt with my Elgin, I managed to "polish" a few
spots from slippage on the underside of the corrector with TOT when I didn't

use newspaper under the corrector I was polishing. Now that I will be
placing a finished surface on the bottom, I want to protect it from any wear

what with CeO all over the place much less from any contact with normal
washing or accidental brushing against my wedding ring or whatever else.

I was thinking something as simple as plastic wrap but that seems like it
would get annoying with washing.

It seems like latex paint would peel off nicely but hopefully not stick too
bad to require aggressive removal.

What I was wondering was what do you use, both to coat and to dissolve when
you are finished?
