Re: [ATM] Mirror Tester

Thanks for the advice about the mirror tester.

My progress in mirror making is rather slow due to increased workload at office. However, I am determined to complete my scope no matter how long it takes.

  · I have started polishing and the mirror is now showing some polish. There is a raised zone around the center .Let see how long it takes to polish out.
  · I am using red rouge for polishing. I want to save the contents of the Care Package sent by you for my next mirror.
  · Reading about something and then doing it practically takes some time to get the feel of it. I am learning how to polish, and its very different from grinding. During polishing sleeks appear on the mirror surface. At time it feels that there are some high edges on pitch squares, which cause these sleeks. Warm press the lap and this feeling is gone, but after some time into polishing that feeling appears again.
  · I am polishing the mirror with slow speed and lots of downward pressure.
  · I have discovered a group of people interested in astronomy in Pakistan; by the name of Lahore Astronomical Society (Last) they have a yahoo group called ?Astronomy-atLAST?. They are more interested in observing than telescope making some member of this group have made their own telescope in the past. They organize observing sessions once in a year.
  · They are planning their next gathering in mid April. I will take part in this gathering ___ subject to completion of my scope.

Thanks once again to all list members who, responded to my query.

  Regards,

  Mahmood

How are things progressing there in Pakistan? Looks like you are getting along if you are building your tester.

The correction of the mirror is almost exactly equal to the saggitta of the mirror so if you have less than 10 mm of sag, your dial indicator will be ok. It might be a bit tricky to set up if your sag is close to 10mm but thats all the trouble you'll have and why a bit more travel is desirable.

Please let us know about your progress so far and of any things you've discovered from your point of view.
