Yes.  However, my wedge tester doubled as a thickness gauge.  To use
it as such, I needed to get the sagitta designated by the ball
separation.  The precision of that calculation improves if the
separation is close to that that would match the half-diameter of
the lens.  Thus the desire for so many rings of holes.  The choice
of pilot/depth simply matched 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" balls.  The other
pieces that was needed were the reference/nulling plates, but their
form was simple.
