A diamond tool will cut a lot faster than grit does and the
pressure can be higher than with grit. Don't try for 80 grit as
this will be quite large for getting into the s;lot you're
cutting. Better to use riner grit like 220 or so. The finer
grit will cut almost as fast and get into the slot faster. With
grit, you need to cut slots in the cutter so it forces the grit
down into the slot.
FWIW, it took me 3 hours to do a 14" blank 3/4" thick at about
10rpm. I didn't have much control over the speed which is why I
cut at that speed. I would have liked to have had about 3x the
speed as that would have been probably about the right speed for
that diameter.
