I found wedge incredibly easy to control.
If you have edged the disks round and use a wedge tester such as the one Don
Clement pointed to at Newport's web site, it should be easy. If the disks
aren't round, measuring can be difficult.
On coarse ground surfaces the dial indicator will jump around as you turn
the glass in the tester, so you can only get so close zero wedge. As you go
to finer grits it jumps less and you can get closer to zero wedge. By the
time you get down to the micron grits you can see .0001 or so of wedge. If
you can see it you can remove it.
On a 4" doublet I had no difficulty controlling wedge well enough that a
.0001 dial indicator sits motionless as I turn the glass in the wedge
tester.
