Re: [ATM] Secondary mirror base
I would suggest that you find some fiberboard of some kind, Micarta comes to mind. I do not trust plywood for any purpose for which it was not designed and even then have reservations. Unless you are using premium grade plywood, you will have temperature and humidity driven changes in the system that will be a colimation nightmare. Yes, I know that plywood has layers that alternate to keep the plywood "stiff" etc but the designers of plywood are designing for construction grade materials where 1/8th inch over the wifth of the sheet is considered "PERFECT", they are not designing a material for optical systems where a change of .000001 is too much.

Hi,
I am building a secondary mirror support for a 3 inch diagonal mirror. I want to silicon the mirror to a wooden base. Normally, I use a piece of hardwood but locally no one has anything thick enough. I have some 12mm thick hardwood. Could I glue several thicknesses together and use that? Alternatively I have some softwood ply I could glue together. Would either of these options be stable enough?
Thanks,
