Channeling a tool improves abrasive distribution, and leads to faster,
more uniform grinding. A tool with channels will let you finish an
abrasive grade more quickly, and also with a better sphere.
Additionally, it prevents vacuum locking the two pieces together
during fine grinding because air can get into the channels.
I encourage it - just make sure to use a wet grinding stone on the
edges of the channels to remove sharp edges and flakes of glass that
might chip off during grinding and cause scratches. This is
especially important for fine grinding.
