When you think about it, it really is sort of amazing we can make optics
at all without a bunch of scratches all over. Look how small those fine
grits really are and how impossible it is to really clean all of them up.
With my background in chemistry, I think a lot of the credit goes to
soap and water. Without the ability to overcome surface forces on those
tiny particles, we wouldn't have a chance of getting clean enough.
Plus, soap and water are really hard on bacteria and viruses. I'll bet
professional opticians get fewer colds.
