I too have vacuumed the cat.  Way way back when.  Last I polished glass, I could see dry eighty grit stuck to the newspaper around and under the wooden polishing board I was using.  A board also used for grinding.  
   
  I seem to unintentionally scratch glass every few years.  Once while I was polishing big glass, it suffered a truly nasty scratch.  It screeched at first, then with an added crunching grinding sound I managed to stop.  Seems while I had washed the lap, some stucco had fallen from the ceiling onto the glass .  I didn't go back.  I usually don't.  For an ATM a scratch is a blow to the ego, not the bottom line.  
   
  As for cleaning up.  The dog REALLY doesn't like the vacuum cleaner.
