I've used HDPE as clutch material on my Bartelized 17.5" dob for several years and it works very well. It is 6" in diameter and sandwiched between a 6" aluminum disk and originally a plywood gear and now a HDPE gear. The material shows no signs of wear and I've never seen any plastic dust generated. In fact it's the aluminum disk showing very slight sign of wear.
