It is possible to make your own linear strip (that old roll of 2415 Tech Pan
Estar base film in the fridge comes to mind) by mounting the film on the
perimeter of a low jitter constant speed rotating disc. A pulsed source (LED
or Laser) through a slit could then illuminate and expose evenly spaced
lines. Then use something like a HEDS 9X00 linear optical encoder module for
quadrature readout.

Similarly, one could use magnetic tape around the perimeter of a rotating
disc and write evenly spaced magnetic "lines" with a write tape head. Use a
two-channel tape read head to read the magnetic lines for quadrature output.
The magnetic tape method may be more insensitive to dirt contamination than
the optical.
