If my tester didn't rock a little bit it wouldn't be as useful. ;-)  
The shade of gray is not the only thing that I judge.  Nudging the 
tester you can determine if the two sides 'wink' the same.  It is not 
abnormal for me to spend 10 to 20 minutes per zone looking and judging 
that the two sides behave the same in every aspect I can detect.  
Movement is a key.  I have seen the light come in from the outside on 
both openings too.  I have always wondered about the folks that say 
they take a reading when both sides first start to darken. I was never 
comfortable with that method.  I think with my method I end up cutting 
all the way through so I see any difference at any point of the light 
cone being cut off.  Probably just a sign of obsession.

I live below the Great Lakes where we get lots of cloud cover so I have 
to get it as close as I can on the bench.
