George, you royal rascal,  you have unwittingly hit on a good one.  You can
eliminate the eyepiece... because with enough suction, your eyeball will
become elongated as it is pulled into the focuser tube!  The smaller the
tube, the greater the elongation of your eyeball.  This allows your eye to
focus at very close distances, possibly as close as the focal pain.

Hmmm, bring to thought pulled mirrors. How about a vacuume pulled Mak
corrector?
Has all sorts of possibilities....    :^)
Could be a bit of a bugger keeping the focuser from being sucked in
unless you had a window, maybe it could serve as a field flattener with
the deformation (VBG).
