From your last line I assume you have steel rungs in your tailgate. In
that case, drill the collimation bolt holes, preferably with a drill
press, then tap the holes from one side only. I mount the tap in the
drill press chuck and turn by hand to assure perpendicularity. Then,
from the top side of the rung I screw in a bolt with a nut on the
bottom of the rung. The nut will be tack welded when the rest of the
tailgate is welded up. This gives more threads than just the tubing
walls for the collimation bolt to work against. SS nuts weld just like
regular steel nuts and don't give off toxic fumes during welding like
the regular kind.
