There are a couple of items available to use for this purpose. One if
called a T-Nut, the other is called a threaded insert..

And Item c on this page is a brass threaded insert that can be screwed
into a wood base to allow the adjustments on the mirror cell

The T-nuts are mainly designed to be used in a clamping action. They
should be used so that the pressure will keep pushing into the part they
are installed in and should be glued in to prevent them working loose.
The brass threaded inserts are a little better but they still have to
be installed in a wood base.
