Sorry I missed that question.  Most LEDs have quite a broad spectrum 
and don't work well for monochromatic sources.  Some may work, but 
I've never seen them.

Lasers are monochromatic, but they would require lots of diffusion to 
work in a setup like mine and then I think the resulting light would 
be REALLY dim.  Diffused laser pointers have been used to fringe test 
smaller mirrors.  See my recent posts for a link to this.

Fluorescent bulbs are safe to look at, easily diffused (they are a 
large light source), inexpensive, and cool in operation, so they are a 
nice compromise.
