I don't know about Northern Europe, but northern North America has 
enough bugs to drive any sane person back to the middle latitudes.  A 
dismayingly large fraction of them find human blood very tasty.  One 
reason winter sports are big in Canada, is that in many parts, if you go 
outdoors during the warmer season, all of your blood will be sucked out 
by mosquitoes.  I have a tent with blood stains on the inside from 
swatting Canadian mosquitoes before going to sleep.
