Lap Storage:  only in a Tupperware cake container or under a glass bowl that
does not touch the pitch anywhere.   Even the slight pressure of a plastic
bag on the pitch will, over time, cause the pitch to flow and degrade the
contact with the glass.   Since you don't want the pitch to flow, store the
lap in a refrigerator if you are going away from it for more than a day or
so.   Let it warm up and let the mirror rest on it for a couple hours before
working again.

I did not scrape or brush the lap. Is there some guideline I should
use to recognize when to do this? Now at the outset I didn't wash the
lap off after use. Eventually the CeO mix built up and I used a soft
brush to remove that and generally clean it up a bit. I should also
mention that when not in use I store the lap in a plastic, sealed
container.

Have you tried wire brushing or scraping the surface?  Is your lap too
thing?  Is it possible it has become too hard?
