This may be a side effect, but it is not the original reason for
designing in such a wide FOV.  That wide a FOV allows a larger
tolerance in setting up the lens on the pole -- it may not be
a fully qualified individual that has to shinny up the pole and
set the lens on top (in a Chicago winter, no less!!).  The larger
the FOV, the less strict the alignment has to be.
