re: [ATM] machine hogging

Hello Guy.

What diameter is the tool? When I tried to hog with a barbell weight my progress was comparably slow, almost nil. Then I poured a tile tool of about 65% mirror diameter and let it run close to, but not crossing the mirror edge. This helped a bit and hogging started. I had then to rebuild the tile tool as the first layer wore out. I guess that a smaller tool, close to 50% mirror diameter, would work better, i.e. faster.

As Dave mentioned a pre-generated iron tool may work better. From what I read those tools make sense when you plan to make several mirrors with the same diameter and Rc since the iron tool doesn't change Rc too much, if any.

Is the tool flat or ring shaped? A flat iron tool will not hog, it must be ring shaped with the ring being not too wide. As said above, my experience with tile tool is much more promising.

I used up to 25 pounds of weight when hogging, 5 pounds might be not enough. Here I would like to have even more weight but have yet to go out and buy more BB weights. Put load on the tool.

Happy grinding,
Chris
